Jewellery & Watch Probation Valuation

What is a probation valuation?

A probate valuation establishes the open market value of jewellery, watches, gold, silver and other precious items as part of administering someone’s estate after their death. For Inheritance Tax purposes, HMRC defines open market value as the price an item might reasonably be expected to fetch if sold on the open market at that time.

The valuation is generally based on the item’s value at the date of death, rather than its replacement cost or insurance value. This means an existing insurance valuation may be significantly higher and should not automatically be used for probate purposes.

At Jacksons Jewellers in Morpeth, we can assess individual items or larger collections of jewellery, watches and precious metal items and provide written valuation documentation for estate administration purposes. We provide clear, professional assessment to help executors and families deal with the estate.

Probate valuation is different from an insurance valuation

A jewellery or watch insurance valuation establishes an appropriate replacement value for insurance purposes. A probate valuation assesses the open market value at the date of death, so an insurance valuation should not be automatically treated as a probate valuation.

Probate valuation vs. looking to sell?

A probate valuation and an offer to purchase are different services. If you're considering selling your jewellery, gold, silver or luxury watch instead, Jacksons Jewellers can assess your item and provide a free, no obligation purchase offer with instant payment by cash or bank transfer.

How probate valuations work

1. Bring Your Items In

Bring your jewellery, watch or precious items into our Morpeth store. If you have any previous valuations, receipts, certificates, boxes or supporting paperwork, bring these with you where available.

2. We Assess Your Items

Our experienced team will carefully examine each item, taking into account its materials, gemstones, condition, make, model and other relevant details.

3. We Photograph Everything

We take clear photographs of each item to create a detailed visual record to accompany your valuation.

4. Receive Your Written Valuation

We prepare a clear written valuation report detailing the items assessed and their appropriate open market value for inheritance tax purposes, giving you documentation to provide to HRMC along with your IHT forms as evidence of the items values at the date of death.

The importance of the date of death

For probate purposes, the relevant date of valuation is ordinarily the date of death rather than simply today’s open market value.

Visit us in Morpeth or get in touch to discuss your valuation needs, and we’ll guide you through the process.

Valuing jewellery and watches as part of an estate

Estates often contain more than one valuable item. At Jacksons Jewellers in Morpeth, we can value individual pieces or collections containing jewellery, watches, gold, silver, coins and other precious items. Each item is assessed individually to establish an appropriate open market value for probate purposes, with clear written valuation documentation provided for the estate.
